Well-positioned.

I liked the tone of objectivity and a quiet dis-passion full of passion in this post. Quite befitting for someone who sees Dhoni the way he does. I liked the facts, the stories and the observations. Also, the subdued adoration. You sure will miss him on the Test field as would I. Dhoni is probably THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CAPTAIN to have ever played for India (I am thinking about his three major victories, one after another - World Cup, T20 and IPL). Things might be downwards for him now, but he will always be remembered as the calm, composed and persistent captain that he truly was.

Thanks for presenting this fitting test cricket farewell to him. If ever he reads this, he will happy that there are at least some people out there who see him for what he truly is. Haven't r...Deep and thoughtful analysis indeed. Haven't read all of your post to death but enough to be able to comment - agreed that we are looking down the barrel and it won't be too long till we see the side going through so called "rebuilding" stage. All said and done I still believe there is cricket left in the likes of VVS, Sachin, Dravid, Zaheer.

Given the fantastic run over the last couple of years that we have enjoyed, dare I say it, the team was complacent (at least it comes across like that). The fact that Kirsten walked out does not help the situation. It's understandable for complacency to find its way in after a tremendous run.

Having said that, anyone who has played club cricket for a period of time should be able to tell you how easy it is pull your hammy if you are fast bowler who is coming back to the "real" test after a bit of a break. In my view, this is sloppy work, when you are on the wrong side of 30 you can't expect your body to keep up. You shouldn't even risk it when you know that you are the top bowler in the side which is NOT famous for their bowlers.

The team's intent was right, they were raring to go and maintain that top spot. But completely underestimated the size of the task (beating England at home).

Once Zaheer walked off with a sore hammy on the first day of the series, it was a big mental blow more than anything else and the series was lost on the first day itself, heads dropped in despair that it's going to be a very long six week period.

Looking up to the future, I'd like to see them put a good fight when they tour Australia later in the year. A little birdy whispered the other day that Indians have already lost the Australia series in their minds. A 4 - 0 whitewash when you are the top side in the world hurts, it should, real bad.

Let's talk baby steps now, the next big challenge for me is to see how the team plays together (including the likes of Sehwag, Sachin, Gambhir, Dravid, Dhoni, Bhajji, Zaheer, VVS), considering the next time they all play together in a test match it will be after a gap of a good 6 - 8 months since they have played as a unit.gavydudehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02129855428438862894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13128398.post-49656913544874197662011-08-14T20:33:18.645+05:302011-08-14T20:33:18.645+05:30Thank you for the praises :) The data was all sour...Thank you for the praises :) The data was all sourced from Cricinfo which has a detailed stats section. The historic match was at Lord's and not the Oval, a small correction :)
The paradox is not difficult because in one day cricket it is much easier for the batsmen to make up for bowling deficiencies given the lesser number of overs. Test cricket exposes both temperament and talent.

This is a glimmer of hope but i see tough times ahead and hence the need to set realistic goals.
The averages are correct, Gambhir has a phenomenal average overseas due to good tours of New Zealand and South Africa. He is one of the pegs on which the future must revolve.the lazy knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12776924873209244313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13128398.post-20046843079293681862011-08-14T15:45:35.137+05:302011-08-14T15:45:35.137+05:30This blog has already been read before me by sever...This blog has already been read before me by several others. Good :)

Insightful post... deep analysis. Where did you manage to collate the data? All of what you write is logical and true... though given the same paradox, it would be difficult to explain Team India's fantastic performance in the last 6 months... and the World Cup. Pity that the string of losses had to begin with that historic test match lost at the Oval. Nonetheless, I like the post. And most importantly, I like the slight gleam of hope, the depth of your research (and the hyperlinks), and the logical solutions that you offer.

Keep up the good work.

P.S.
